Google and Mozilla will stop displaying company name in the address bar of the browser

The developers of the largest browsers Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox announced that they will cease to display company names in EV (Extended Validation) SSL certificates. At the moment, organisation names are is displayed in the address bar of the browser.

Starting with Chrome 77, which is scheduled for September, organisation names will no longer be present in the address bar of the browser. A similar improvement will be implemented in Firefox 70, which is scheduled for October.

Why did the browser developers decide not to display EV in the address bar?

All information about the EV SSL certificate can now be viewed by clicking on the padlock icon.

The reason behind removing EV indicators from the address bar of browsers is simple: large companies, including Twitter, Amazon, YouTube, Facebook, do not use these certificates.

In the long run, Chrome developers want to abandon the padlock icon for HTTPS sites completely. The same will be implemented in Firefox 77.

According to Google, EV certificate name occupies valuable space on the browser screen and breaks the integrity of the UI for all other types of certificates. Another issue is that, in mobile browsers, the EV indication is usually not displayed (or displayed, but for most users it is not obvious). Apple experts have already refused to display the company name for EV certificates in Safari on iOS 12 and macOS 10.14.

You will not need to stop using EV SSL certificates - they are still used and guarantee maximum protection of your transmitted data.
